How to Choose an Engineering Course

Many students choose to pursue a degree in engineering after intermediate studies. In India, there is a dominant trend for this. There are thousands of engineering colleges across the country producing batches of engineering graduates every year. The number of IITs and NITs are being increased to accommodate students in almost every state. Engineering courses are available in every university. The entrance tests for engineering are both through online exam and on paper test. Although, in most of the institutes and colleges, only the common branches of engineering are available, in top institutes such as IITs and NITs, students has lot of options to choose from.

A common confusion faced by every student after clearing engineering entrance exams is choosing the course. Here are some points to consider while choosing a field:

•Engineering is considered to be a professional course. It is about specialization in particular field of production, manufacturing, maintenance and so on. You must realize that once you choose engineering, you would have to deal with lifeless machines all your life. That is why, it is important to pursue your interest. Else, in the long run, job satisfaction becomes a big issue.

•To know what exactly your interest is and fit this into your education, you must know what the graduation degree would lead to. You should know the related industries to the course and the type of job the engineering course would offer.

•The best way to be sure about your interest is to find out what you expect your life to be. Your preference in different aspects of life matters a lot. Do you want to be rich? Do you want adventure? Do you want to contribute to some greater good? Do you want people to remember you hundred years after you die? These are some questions you should evaluate yourself before planning a career. Earlier it starts, better your life would be.

•If you want to be rich and earn money, choose the engineering course that have the highest job prospect. Understand that job availability depends on industry and global economy. It is much larger than you think it to be. It depends of critical global factors. Therefore, this is prone to change. However, it is not tough to find out the sector that has good jobs.

•Competition is another important factor. It is very logical, if most of the students go for the common branches, competition for jobs would be much higher in them. Qualified personals would be more and hence, jobs will be less. Rare and unique engineering courses have greater job opportunities. There are some courses such as Aerospace Engineering, Marine Engineering, Leather Technology, Food Technology and so on under exams such as IIT JEE and AIEEE, which has limited seats. Such courses have greater job prospects.

•Selection of course also depends on the institutes. After, you clear exams such as Joint Entrance Exam; the counseling process itself defines the branch you should choose. A degree from good institutes could get you better job opportunities. The institute matters while choosing a course in Engineering.

•Students should be careful about some courses that have no prospect for future research and studies. For some engineering degree, there are no provisions for pursuing masters or research. If you want to go for higher studies, better avoid such courses. Therefore, while choosing an engineering course, find out its prospects for higher studies as well.

A Guide to SSC Preparation

SSC or Staff Selection Commission is the central body under Indian government. This commission is responsible for recruitment of positions such as assistants, sub inspector, Clerks, Junior Engineer and non gazette posts. Primarily, the lower category posts in departments and ministries are filled up through this commission. The Combined Graduate Level Exam, in short, SSC CGL is for graduates. Through this exam, posts such as Inspectors, Auditors, Assistants and so on are recruited in various ministries and departments.

SSC CGL is a two tier exam. It comprises of a preliminary and main exam followed by interview. For some posts, a Tier III exam is also held as skill tests such as typing, computer skills and so on. Students who clear through the first phase are allowed for the next phase or the Tier II exam. Preparation of the exam depends on your skills. Here is a quick guide:

•A general approach for any exam is to know about the extent of its questions. Tier I of SSC CGL has four sections of fifty questions each. They are General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Comprehension. The best way to know the pattern of questions and difficulty level is to follow the previous year question papers.

•After you got to know the level of difficulty; it is time for original preparation. What you will need to spent time the most is on Quantitative Aptitude. Quantitative aptitude questions comprise of secondary level mathematics. To prepare for this, you must know and remember the concepts and some simple formulas. Go through all the sections of its syllabus and learn every tricky question for this. For this section you would need to study the concepts as well as practice the questions hand in hand. Following some standard book is better.  The Quantitative Aptitude by RS Aggarwal and the Tata McGraw Hill Publication for Civil Services Preliminary exam are good books.

•General Intelligence & Reasoning is more about practicing the questions. There is no much tricks and concept learning for this. Practice the questions directly with hints and solutions. It is about how quickly you can think and come at a conclusion. For self evaluation, you may appear a SSC online test.

•For English, in CGL, you will need to master some grammar rules. Voices transformation, Speech transformation, Tenses, Prepositions and at the best, the comprehensions, comprise most of the questions. Concept learning is more important in English. Once you understand the concepts clearly, solving the questions becomes easy. Online practice test helps to solve questions quickly.

•For general awareness, there is no fixed strategy. Watching news, reading daily news papers, reading the Year Book and good general knowledge books will help. There is no practice for this. Just keep your leisure time occupied with a current affair or a general knowledge book.

•The Tier II exam is about Speed. There are 150 to 200 questions in each of two papers. CGL Tier II comprises only of Quantitative Aptitude and English paper. The syllabus and the question pattern are same. But the speed with which you solve them in Tier I must be increased to thrice for Tier II.  Forming up the speed of solving is always a part of SSC Preparation.
